Press Releases - First all male Quintuplets in India

First all male Quintuplets in India Born at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital

8- Member team of doctors at Kokilaben Hospital orchestrates beautifully India's first surviving set of Quintuplets.

India's newest and most advanced Tertiary Care facility along with the team has done it once again! Kokilaben Hospital is the first to have successfully delivered a set of male quintuplets.

Mrs Khan, a young 24-year old woman was able to carry the pregnancy till 28-29 weeks. The five healthy infants were all delivered within a 3 minute gap. "This was all possible due to the infrastructure, team effort with a near perfect liaison between the doctors," says Ubaid Khan, proud father.

The team led by Dr. Suchitra N.Pandit and her assistants Dr Maya Gade, Dr. Jatinder Kaur, Dr. Chaitali Kale - Obstetrician & Gynaecologist - Dr. Vinay Joshi and Dr. Preetha Joshi - Neonatal and Pediatric Intensivists with Dr. Sharmila Ranade , Dr.Mohan and  Dr Harshal Wagh Anesthesiologists– along with the perfect synchrony of nurses.

Mrs Khan was referred to Kokilaben Hospital for extensive management because of watery vaginal discharge. The neonatal team started getting ready with all the required equipment -they took every measure to make ensure that the C-section went smoothly. There were 5 sets of ventilators, 5 incubators and 5 sets of nurses geared up to take care of each baby.

The five babies were born within a three minute time span shortly after 12:36 pm on September 4, 2009. They arrived in the following order: the first two weighed 930gm, 910gm, and  the remaining three babies of 850 gms each.

The young couple was well counseled regarding the problems anticipated during caesarean section: possibilities from post partum hemorrhage to premature and low birth weight babies .

The team went through several mock drills to get it right! "We also did mock drills with our respective teams and then again all of us did it together so as to ensure that everything moved on smoothly during the actual surgery." Says Dr Pandit.

To quote some statistics only 16 sets of quintuplets have been born without ovulation inducing drugs. Ours is the 17th one in the world. In India there have been 5 sets of quintuplets out of which 2 were stillborn , 3rd and 4th set were born but died within two hours .The 4th set of quintuplets were delivered at Lucknow but they were undiagnosed and 2 did not survive.

This is the first time in India that a set of all male quintuplets have been born and having crossed a gestational age of 28 weeks. All this was possible because of a team of full-time specialist with the latest infrastructure and excellent support staff at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital .
And of course blessings of the Almighty !!
