Have you ever wondered what is it? How is it different then the regular cough and cold? Sinusitis\u00a0is an\u00a0inflammation\u00a0or swelling of the tissue lining the\u00a0sinuses. Healthy\u00a0sinuses\u00a0are filled with air. However, when they become blocked and filled with fluid, germs can grow and cause an infection.<\/p>\n<h5>Some conditions that can cause sinus blockage:<\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>Common cold<\/li>\n<li>Allergic rhinitis, which is swelling of the lining of the nose<\/li>\n<li>Small growths in the lining of the nose called\u00a0nasal polyps<\/li>\n<li>A\u00a0deviated septum, which is a shift in the nasal cavity<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Below things can cause sinusitis in children:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Allergies<\/li>\n<li>Illnesses from other kids at\u00a0day care\u00a0or school<\/li>\n<li>Pacifiers<\/li>\n<li>Bottle drinking while lying on the back<\/li>\n<li>Smoke in the environment<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5>Where are they located?<\/h5>\n<p>Sinuses are a connected system of hollow cavities in the skull. The largest sinus cavities are about an inch across. Others are much smaller.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Your cheekbones hold your maxillary\u00a0sinuses\u00a0(the largest).<\/li>\n<li>The low-center of your forehead is where your frontal sinuses are located.<\/li>\n<li>Between your\u00a0eyes\u00a0are your ethmoid sinuses.<\/li>\n<li>In bones behind your nose are your sphenoid sinuses.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5>Types of Sinus conditions:<\/h5>\n<p><strong>Acute sinusitis\u00a0(sinus infection):<\/strong>\u00a0This is caused by viruses, bacteria, or fungi which infect the sinus cavity, causing\u00a0inflammation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Chronic sinusitis:<\/strong>\u00a0This is more than infection, chronic\u00a0sinusitis\u00a0is a persistent process of\u00a0inflammation\u00a0of the sinuses.<\/p>\n<p>Deviated septum:\u00a0If the septum that divides the nose is too far too one side, airflow can be blocked.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Allergic sinusitis:<\/strong>\u00a0Allergens like\u00a0pollen,\u00a0dust mites, and pet dander cause the defences in the nose and sinuses to overreact.<\/p>\n<h5>Signs and symptoms of \u00a0sinuses:<\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>Sinus headaches are often at their worst in the morning because fluids have been collecting all night long. It can also get worse when the barometric pressure of your environment changes suddenly.<\/li>\n<li>As the discharge from your sinuses drains down the back of your throat, it can cause irritation, especially over a long period of time. This can lead to a persistent which worsens when lying down on the bed.<\/li>\n<li>Postnasal drip can leave you with a raw and aching throat. It starts as an \u00a0annoying tickle but may get worse. If the infection lasts for a few weeks it may result in a painful\u00a0sore throat\u00a0and hoarse voice.<\/li>\n<li>Cough and sometimes fever.<\/li>\n<li>It also leads to pressure or pain in the ears and teeth.<\/li>\n<li>It causes occasionally facial swelling and feeling of nasal stuffiness.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5>Some sinusitis facts:<\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>Sinusitis can be caused by infection, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/allergy\/article.htm\">allergies<\/a>, and chemical or particulate irritation of the sinuses.<\/li>\n<li>Most people do not spread sinus infections to other people.<\/li>\n<li>Sinus infection is generally diagnosed based on the patient history and physical examination.<\/li>\n<li>Bacterial sinusitis is usually treated with antibiotics. Early treatment of allergic sinusitis may prevent secondary bacterial sinus infections.<\/li>\n<li>Complications of a sinus infection that may develop are<a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/encephalitis_and_meningitis\/article.htm\">meningitis<\/a>, brain abscess, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/osteomyelitis\/article.htm\">osteomyelitis<\/a>, and orbital\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/cellulitis\/article.htm\">cellulitis<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Are you or a family member suffering from sinus?
