Mumbai September 13, 2009 – Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital and Medical Research Institute, India's newest and most advanced tertiary care facility sets yet another benchmark by launching Mumbai first Division of Pediatric and Congenital Heart Surgery - Children's Heart Center - a venture to provide quality healthcare from neonates, infants, children to adults with heart disease in Mumbai; in fact the whole of western India.
It is Mumbai's first Hospital to have a world-class facility, multi-specialty unit, state-of-art infrastructure and a dedicated team of trained round- the-clock Congenital Pediatric Cardiac Surgeons, Pediatric Cardiologists, Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesiologists, Intensive Care Specialist, perfusionist, nurses, counsellors and other paramedical staff.
Research indicates that 8 per 1000 live births in children, nearly 180,000 children are born every year with this problem. Nearly 10% of infant mortality rate is seen due to Congenital Heart Defects (CHD). Mumbai, even though a leader in many fields in medical care did not have a center dedicated to CHD. It is estimated that every year almost 300 children with this defect fly to other parts in the county for treatment from Mumbai.
Commenting on the situation Dr Rao and his team of experts feel "Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital is aiming to usher in a new pattern of medical care – a full-time institute of excellence to treat Congenital Heart Disease and bridge this long felt lacuna seen in Mumbai."
Mumbai has been a leader in many fields of medical care and has some of the finest centres of medical excellence. However in the field of congenital heart care it has hopelessly lagged behind when compared to South India or Delhi. A whole lot of children from Mumbai have had to go to centres located outside for treatment much to the inconvenience of the families. This has been solely to the type and culture of medical practice prevalent here – which favors individuals operating in many hospitals, than a team in one place.
Congenital heart disease treatment needs a whole time & dedicated team of professionals with full time pediatric cardiac surgeons, pediatric cardiologists, anesthesiologists, intensive care specialists, perfusionists, nurses and other paramedical staff. In essence, it needs a dedicated institutional practice which has not been seen in this part of the country, till now.
