The ‘Total Quality Management Seminar’ hosted by Biochemistry & Immunology Department of Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital & Medical Research Institute, Mumbai in collaboration with the Association of Clinical Biochemists of India, Maharashtra Chapter, was an attempt in reviving quality awareness. The event took place in the Convention Centre of Kokilaben Hospital (KH) on 7th January, 2012.
Dr. Ram Narain, Executive Director - KH ,delivered his welcome address and highlighted on ‘Administrative Perspectives on Total Quality Management’ in his opening presentation. The Chief Guest of the seminar, Dr. Girdhar J. Gyani, Secretary General Quality Council of India (QCI) & CEO, NABH; Dr. Avinash Phadke, President, Super Religare Laboratories Ltd. (SRL), and Dignitaries of Kokilaben Hospital inaugurated the programme by lighting the lamp.
Dr. Barnali Das, organising secretary of this seminar, started the scientific session by outlining the background and motivation behind this event. The seminar was attended by around 300 delegates (Biochemists, Pathologists, Microbiologists, Medical Directors, Administrators, General Managers, Quality Managers, Laboratory Managers and PG Students) from all over Maharashtra. The technical programme included seven presentations by distinguished national & international speakers from Quality Council of India (QCI), College of American Pathologists (CAP), NABH and NABL.
Dr. Girdhar J. Gyani, Secretary General, QCI & CEO, NABH elaborated the role of accreditation in improving patient safety and quality of care in his keynote address. Dr. Thuppil Venkatesh, Principal Advisor, QCI & Director, National Referral Centre for Lead Poisoning in India, delivered his invited talk on recognition for quality through accreditation medical testing laboratories. Dr. Milind Bhide, Director, Bhide Laboratories, discussed new challenges in laboratory information system. Dr. Barnali Das, Consultant, KH, concluded the morning session by sharing their experience in implementing Lean-Six Sigma protocol in the Biochemistry & Immunology Laboratory.
In the afternoon session, Dr Santosh Shetty, Chief Operating Officer, KH, welcomed the CAP team and outlined the management vision in accreditation. Dr. Bharati Jhaveri, CAP Governor, delivered her keynote address on CAP accreditation overview. Dr. Ronald B. Lepoff, CAP Inspector, spoke about physical space & safety requirements from the view point of accreditation. Ms. Adrienne Malta, Senior Manager, CAP inspection services, detailed the methods for fulfilling CAP’s competency assessment requirements. There was also a panel discussion with Dr. Varsha Vadera, Head, Lab Medicine, KH; Dr. Simi Bhatia, Director, SRL; Dr. Nisha Ahmed, Chief Pathologist, Metropolis; Dr. Maria Borges, CQO, SRL and speakers of technical sessions to conclude the day. Finally, vote of thanks was proposed by Dr. Barnali Das.
