A cochlear implant is a safe, FDA approved medical-electronic device designed to provide enhanced sound perception by bypassing the damaged or missing hair cells and stimulating the hearing (auditory) nerve directly. Cochlear Implant is an effective, high performance solution for individuals with severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss. It has 2 parts – internal implant & external processor – accessories. The internal is surgically implanted by an ENT and post 3-4 weeks the externals are switched-on by an Audiologist where the implantee starts to hear for the first time through the cochlear implant. Thereafter the complete post-cochlear implant rehabilitation programme begins.
